Netflix is in final negotiations to purchase Death Note, based on the popular anime of the same name, to add to its growing list of feature films. Variety reported that STX and Lionsgate were also interested in the film, which stars Nat Wolff and Margaret Qualley and will be directed by Adam Wingard. Its expected to start production in June under Netflix.
The Death Note movie has received accusations of whitewashing over casting Wolff and Qualley over Japanese actors as the leads, and some fans have already planned to boycott the movie.
The movie follows a student who finds a notebook and discovers that he can kill people by writing their names on the pages. He becomes consumed with this power, while an elusive and genius detective known as L tries to find and stop him. The movie producersdont plan to shy away from the dark source material; producer Roy Lee said in February that there is zero chance it will be below an R-rating.
With Netflix, that probably won’t be a problem.
